What to see inside

The museum is a former monastic settlement of churches, chapels and refectories carved into the rock between the 10th and 12th centuries. You follow a looping path between them, ducking into cool stone interiors painted with vivid biblical frescoes.

Don't miss the Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise), whose limited light exposure has preserved some of the most vivid frescoes in the region. It requires a small separate ticket, and it's worth every cent.

  • Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) — best-preserved frescoes, separate ticket.
  • Apple Church, Sandal Church and the Buckle Church (across the road).
  • The Nuns' and Monks' convents carved several storeys into the rock.

Opening hours and best time to visit

The museum opens early and closes in the late afternoon, with shorter hours in winter. To beat both the heat and the tour-bus crowds, arrive right at opening or in the last hour before close.

  • Arrive at opening (or late afternoon) to avoid mid-day tour groups.
  • Allow 1.5–2 hours to see it properly, longer for photography.
  • Wear sun protection — there's little shade between the churches.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dark Church worth the extra ticket?
Yes. Its protected interior preserves the most vivid, intact frescoes in the whole museum, and the small supplement is well worth it for anyone interested in Byzantine art.
Is the Goreme Open Air Museum covered by the museum pass?
Yes, the main museum entry is covered by the Museum Pass Cappadocia, though the Dark Church usually still requires a small separate ticket.
